Jaisalmer Civic Body Responds to Public Outrage by Disposing of Hundreds of Cattle Carcasses
The Municipal Council in Jaisalmer has initiated the burial of cattle carcasses following public outrage over their abandoned state in a dumping yard. The decision comes after videos surfaced on social media showing hundreds of decomposing bodies at a landfill on Ramgarh road, prompting significant backlash from residents and cow protection groups. The council has also terminated the services of the contractor responsible for the disposal of dead animals.
Municipal Commissioner Lajpal Singh Sodha explained that the contractor had been granted the space for proper burial following a specific disposal process, which includes drying the carcasses before burying them. However, the situation escalated as the contractor failed to manage the disposal efficiently, leading to the accumulation of carcasses over several days. In a bid to mitigate public distress, the civic body deployed teams and earth-moving equipment at the site to commence immediate burial efforts.
Jaisalmer Collector Anupama Jorwal has called for a comprehensive report on the incident, while the Municipal Council has not only cancelled the contractor’s contract but also confiscated their security deposit. Additionally, Mr. Sodha noted that the contractor would be blacklisted from future contracts. This prompt action aims to alleviate the foul odor and potential environmental contamination in the area, thereby addressing the concerns raised by the local community.
