Rajasthan Implements Austerity Measures to Conserve Fuel Amid Rising Tensions in West Asia

The Rajasthan government has introduced austerity measures aimed at conserving fuel amidst the ongoing conflict in West Asia, effectively banning foreign travel for Ministers and officials. This initiative promotes video conferencing and digital governance as alternatives to in-person meetings. Key guidelines issued by the Finance Department mandate that all future vehicle purchases by government departments and public institutions will transition to electric vehicles (EVs), phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles.

The circular, issued by Principal Finance Secretary Vaibhav Galriya, also emphasizes car-pooling among officials, restrictions on external meetings, and a reduction in government convoys. Meetings or events can no longer be held in hotels, with a focus on consolidating gatherings within government premises. Additionally, dignitaries with convoy entitlements have been instructed to minimize the number of non-essential vehicles in use.

To further support these measures, the government will prepare an action plan to enhance EV charging infrastructure and expedite approvals for pending charging station proposals. Online training programs for government officials will replace traditional gatherings, and there is a push for rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Officers have also been directed to conserve energy by turning off all non-essential electrical devices before leaving work, while solar plants will be gradually installed in government offices to meet their electricity requirements.
