Norway’s PM Store expresses hope that PM Modi will leverage ties with Russia to facilitate a ceasefire in Ukraine.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store expressed hope that India would leverage its connections with Russia to advocate for a ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo, Store acknowledged the complexities surrounding India’s energy needs while emphasizing the necessity for greater pressure on Russia to seek peace. He highlighted discussions on geopolitical issues, recognizing that while the two nations have differing positions on Ukraine, he respects India’s reliance on energy sources, including Russian oil, which has significantly increased since the conflict began.

Store underscored Norway’s commitment to supporting Ukraine through military aid and sanctions against Russia, pointing out the need for collaborative efforts to foster dialogue and resolution in the region. He noted the strategic importance of India’s influence and channels with Russia, hoping that these could facilitate a push towards a constructive dialogue and a potential ceasefire. Despite differences in their stances, Store reassured that such discussions have not adversely affected the bilateral relations between Norway and India.

On the topic of India’s involvement with the Arctic Council, Store indicated that differences over Russia would not lead to India being compelled to choose sides among the council’s members. He expressed optimism for India’s growing scientific contributions to Arctic research, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in addressing climate change and related challenges. As leaders from Nordic countries convened for the Third Nordic-India Summit, Store reiterated the collective duty to combat terrorism, stating that political cooperation is essential for creating a safer future for all nations.
