Regular Passenger Train Services Set to Launch on Karaikal-Peralam BG Line from May 20
Regular train services on the Karaikal-Peralam new broad gauge line via Thirunallar will commence on May 20, marking a significant development in regional connectivity after nearly 40 years of suspended passenger services. The electrified 23.5 km stretch, previously served by a meter gauge line, had last seen passenger operations in the mid-1980s. Following an inspection by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the necessary authorization for regular operations was granted, paving the way for the introduction of services on this segment.
From May 20, an express train along with two daily passenger services will operate on the newly electrified line. The express service will reroute the Tambaram-Karaikal-Tambaram train via the Karaikal-Peralam section, extending its reach to Velankanni. This train is scheduled to leave Velankanni at 9:50 p.m., halting briefly at Karaikal and Thirunallar before arriving in Tambaram at 4:35 a.m. Additionally, daily passenger services will connect Velankanni to Mayiladuthurai and operate from Karaikal through Thirunallar and Peralam.
The resumption of these train services comes after years of demand from rail users, who had organized protests for the return of regular operations. Prior to this, the newly opened broad gauge line had mainly facilitated freight services, with only limited special trains operating during local festivals. The establishment of a Passenger Reservation System counter at Thirunallar station further signifies the commitment to enhancing passenger amenities as regular train services resume.
