Prohibitory Orders Implemented in Dehradun Industrial Area Amid Rising Labour Unrest

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the Selaqui and SIDCUL industrial areas of Dehradun district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) following violent protests by labourers demanding higher wages and better working conditions. Additional District Magistrate Krishna Kumar Mishra issued the orders on May 17, 2026, responding to the unrest initiated on May 15, when workers from major industrial units blocked roads and clashed with police, leading to the arrest of several participants.

The directives prohibit individuals from carrying weapons, sticks, or any materials that could be used to incite violence. It also restricts public gatherings, limiting the number to five or fewer in all public spaces, and requires official permission for any protest activities, including rallies and demonstrations. Additionally, the use of loudspeakers in public locations has been curtailed, reflecting the administration’s objective to maintain law and order amidst heightened tensions.

Officials have warned that any vandalism or damage to public property will lead to strict legal repercussions under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The administration has also called upon the public, labour unions, and businesses in the region to exercise restraint and promote a climate of peace and cooperation while these prohibitory measures remain in effect until further notice.
