Ten New MLCs Sworn In at Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan, Strengthening Legislative Representation.

Ten newly elected members took their oaths for the Maharashtra Legislative Council on May 14, 2026, with six members representing the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Notable among the newly sworn-in members are Pragya Satav, who transitioned from Congress to the BJP, and representatives from other parties, including Eknath Shinde-led Neelam Gorhe and Bachchu Kadu from the Prahar Janshakti Party.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by key political figures, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Ajit, and was presided over by Legislative Council chairperson Ram Shinde. Out of the ten positions, nine were filled uncontested, highlighting the BJP’s significant influence in the legislative framework of the state, where they hold a majority in the Assembly with 131 seats.

Currently, the Upper House is functioning with 22 vacancies, 17 of which are assigned to local self-government bodies and five to Governor-nominated seats. The political landscape reflects the BJP’s dominance, especially as they leveraged the Single Transferable Vote (STV) system to secure the majority of MLC seats, thereby reinforcing their power in Maharashtra’s legislative process.
