Vijay Government Announces Restructuring of Magalir Urimai Thogai Programme, Promises Fund Disbursement Soon
The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has announced a need for time to restructure the ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ programme. The release states that the monthly grant for women beneficiaries, which is due for May, will be credited into their bank accounts shortly. This comes amidst the ongoing transition of the programme’s objectives and management.
During his election campaign, Mr. Vijay promised to implement the ‘Madhippumigu Magalir Thittam’, which aims to provide ₹2,500 monthly assistance to all women up to 60 years who serve as heads of families. However, he specified that individuals employed by Union and State governments would not be eligible for this financial support, aiming to expand benefits to a broader group of women. The existing grant under the ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ programme has been ₹1,000 monthly, reflecting a significant increase if the new scheme is successfully implemented.
The ‘Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai’ initiative was originally introduced by the previous DMK government to acknowledge the contributions of women who manage households. Eligibility currently includes women heads of families above the age of 21, from households with an annual income below ₹2.5 lakh. This restructuring effort by Chief Minister Vijay indicates a potential shift in policy that aims to further support women’s rights and enhance their economic empowerment in Tamil Nadu.
