Karnataka Minister D. Sudhakar Passes Away, Leaving a Void in State Politics.
Karnataka’s Planning and Statistics Minister D. Sudhakar passed away at the age of 66 in a private hospital in Bengaluru, where he had been on life support for over two weeks due to a severe lung infection following a knee operation. The hospital declared him dead at 3:15 a.m. on Sunday. His last rites are scheduled to take place in Challakere, Chitradurga district on Monday, while the government has announced a public holiday for schools, colleges, and government institutions, along with a three-day mourning period across the state.
Sudhakar, a four-time MLA who represented the Hiriyur constituency, was known for his political resilience, having successfully navigated challenges throughout his career. Initially elected to the Karnataka Assembly in 2004, Sudhakar’s ability to turn adversities into advantages was evident when, after being denied a Congress ticket in 2008, he contested as an Independent and secured a ministerial position by supporting the BJP government. His political journey encompasses a return to Congress, various leadership roles, and eventual re-election in 2023, culminating in his ministerial appointment.
His death has evoked widespread condolences from political leaders across party lines, highlighting his contributions to Karnataka’s political landscape. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar acknowledged the significant loss felt in the political community, while the latter proposed naming an irrigation project after Sudhakar to honor his advocacy for the Upper Bhadra project. Prominent figures, including AICC general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala, praised Sudhakar’s approachable nature and grassroots connection, reflecting on his lasting impact on Karnataka’s governance.
