GVMC Launches Green Shade at RTC Complex Junction to Provide Summer Relief for Commuters
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has launched the ‘Haritha Ashrayam’ initiative, a green shade structure designed to offer relief to commuters from the intense summer heat at the RTC Complex junction. This innovative structure aims to protect motorists, pedestrians, and individuals waiting at traffic signals during peak afternoon hours. Following a successful implementation of a similar model in the Assilmetta area, this pilot project reflects the GVMC’s proactive approach to enhancing public comfort amid rising temperatures.
Engineered with safety and durability in mind, the shade structure is fortified to withstand strong winds and sudden rain, crucial for ensuring its longevity and functionality. The civic body has integrated water sprinkling systems beneath the shade to create a cooling effect, further alleviating heat stress for commuters. The initiative has garnered positive public feedback, indicating a community appreciation for the GVMC’s commitment to addressing seasonal challenges.
Monitoring of the RTC Complex model is underway by GVMC officials, with plans to evaluate its effectiveness before scaling the project to additional major junctions throughout the city. Chief engineer Satyanarayana Raju emphasized the importance of assessing the pilot’s success, which could lead to broader implementation across Visakhapatnam, underscoring the municipal corporation’s focus on improving urban infrastructure to enhance commuter experience during the summer months.
