Tamil Nadu Requests Delay in DGP Empanelment Committee Meeting Amid Ongoing Concerns

The appointment of a regular Director General of Police in Tamil Nadu is facing further delay as the state government has requested the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to postpone the scheduled Empanelment Committee Meeting initially set for May 11, 2026. The state emphasized that the presence of key officials, including the Chief Secretary and Home Secretary, is crucial in light of ongoing political developments. This request underscores the instability within the government and its impact on administrative processes.

Currently, Sandeep Rai Rathore serves as the DGP and Head of the Police Force, having been appointed by the Election Commission of India to replace G. Venkatraman. Rathore’s tenure is expected to continue until a new chief of police is appointed in line with the Supreme Court’s guidelines stemming from the Prakash Singh case. The postponement marks the third instance of delay for the ECM, which was first scheduled for March 20, 2026, and later deferred on April 23, 2026, due to the Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.

The Empanelment Committee Meeting involves high-ranking officials, including the UPSC chairman and the DGP of a Central Armed Paramilitary Force. Potential candidates for the DGP role are ranked by seniority, with key figures including Seema Agrawal, whose retirement is imminent, alongside Rajeev Kumar and Rathore himself. This situation raises concerns about the administrative effectiveness of the Tamil Nadu police force in a critical period of transition.
