Kerala Fishers Call on PM for New Study Before Approving Deep-Sea Fishing Permits
The fishing communities in Kerala have urged the government to establish a committee that will assess the availability of fish resources in the high seas prior to issuing fishing permits for companies and larger vessels. This request highlights concerns over the current system of issuing permits based on outdated assessments conducted before the year 2000, taking into account the significant changes in fish population and weather conditions since then. With approximately 300,000 fishing boats operating in deep waters, the community advocates for a resource review to determine the sustainable number of vessels needed, suggesting that only around 96,000 may be optimal based on current resources.
This proposal has major implications for both the fishing industry and the common citizen. For local fishermen, the introduction of a scientifically backed permit system could help safeguard their livelihoods by ensuring sustainable fishing practices and preventing overfishing. Additionally, the suggested uniform pricing for diesel at marine fuel pump outlets is expected to reduce the overcrowding that currently hampers operations, thereby enhancing efficiency for fishing boats. The price disparity among fuel outlets is creating logistical challenges, which could further constrain earnings for fishermen and inflate costs for consumers reliant on fish as a staple in their diets.
In the long-term, the government’s response to these requests will be crucial. Establishing the proposed expert committee and following through with their recommendations could significantly enhance the sustainability of fish resources in Indian waters, while also providing a structured and equitable approach to fishing rights. Additionally, aligning fuel prices would contribute to a more organized market for the fishing community. The government and the RBI’s stance on supporting local industries through regulatory adjustments and expert insights will determine the health of this vital economic sector in the coming years.
