Supreme Court Confirms Political Executive’s Authority over Bengal Law and Order Decisions

The Supreme Court ruled that the elected political executive in West Bengal is responsible for making decisions regarding law and order in the state. This decision came during a hearing involving an urgent plea related to the continuation of central forces deployment aimed at curbing post-poll violence following the 2026 Assembly elections.

The Bench, consisting of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, emphasized that the governance of West Bengal would be under the authority of its Political Executive. This statement affirms the principle of state autonomy in managing its affairs, particularly in matters concerning law enforcement and public safety.

The ruling signals a clear directive to local authorities to address potential unrest independently, suggesting that reliance on central forces will not be a long-term solution. This stance aims to reinforce the accountability of elected officials in ensuring peace and stability within the state following the electoral process.
