Vedanta Shares Surge 5% Post-Demerger: Is It Time to Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Shares of Vedanta, led by Anil Agarwal, surged over 8% to a day’s high of Rs 295 on the BSE, driven by strong investor interest in the metals and mining sector following the company’s recent demerger into four distinct entities. The specific listing dates for these newly demerged companies on the BSE and NSE are yet to be confirmed, but Nuvama Institutional Equities has projected potential debut dates in June 2026. As part of the demerger process, shareholders of Vedanta will receive one share in each of the new companies for every share held as of the record date.
Nuvama has established a target price of Rs 336 per share for the reorganized Vedanta, suggesting a potential upside of more than 21% from its opening price of Rs 272 post-pre-open session. According to Harshal Dasani, Business Head at INVasset PMS, the demerger has positioned Vedanta as a more focused entity, primarily associated with sectors such as Hindustan Zinc and base metals. However, the transition to a more concentrated structure necessitates a revision of valuation metrics, as investors must weigh associated risks against the clearer operational focus the company now presents.
The market sentiment surrounding Vedanta has also been buoyed by its robust Q4 results, reporting a 92% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 6,698 crore, accompanied by a 47% rise in revenue from operations to Rs 24,609 crore. Although the demerger is expected to yield a more transparent operating structure for existing shareholders, new investors are advised to exercise caution. The investment decision will depend significantly on various factors, including debt management, valuation of the demerged entities, commodity market cycles, dividend policies, and capital allocation strategies. Thus, while existing shareholders may benefit, new investors should potentially await more favorable price stability before committing to investments in Vedanta.
