Iran Oil Company to Acquire Crude and LPG Tankers Amid Escalating Shipping Risks from West Asia Crisis

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) is set to enhance its shipping capabilities by acquiring its own crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carriers. This strategic shift comes as disruptions in shipping around the Strait of Hormuz and escalating freight costs have compelled the state-owned company to rethink its logistics model. Currently, IOC has three crude oil vessels and nine LPG vessels, primarily operating on time-charter agreements, which have proven cost-effective amid the current crisis. The company’s board has approved the acquisition of additional vessels, indicating a significant pivot in its shipping strategy.

This change is largely driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia that are affecting commercial shipping routes and pushing freight rates to new heights. IOC’s Director of Finance noted that time-chartered crude carriers currently cost between USD 2-2.50 per barrel, a stark contrast to spot-market rates ranging from USD 8-10 per barrel. As geopolitical rivalries intensify, particularly between the U.S. and Iran, IOC has prudently diversified its crude sourcing strategy, reducing its reliance on any single supplier. In the first half of the fiscal year, around 87% of IOC’s crude was sourced through spot purchases, a significant increase from 50% in the previous year, enabling the company to negotiate favorable pricing even in a volatile market.

Short-term, traders and investors should keep a close watch on IOC’s evolving strategy, which includes plans to optimize charter arrangements and support local shipbuilding under the government’s Make in India initiative. While the immediate geopolitical environment carries inherent risks that could influence freight and procurement costs, IOC’s proactive measures in enhancing its shipping capabilities may mitigate some of these uncertainties. As the company continues to bolster its logistics resilience, it could position itself advantageously in an increasingly volatile oil market.
