Mahanagar Gas Increases CNG Price to ₹88 per kg in Mumbai Effective September 1
On September 1, Mahanagar Gas announced a price increase for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by Rs 2 per kg, bringing the total cost to Rs 88 per kg in and around Mumbai. Additionally, domestic piped natural gas (PNG) prices have risen by Rs 1 per standard cubic meter (SCM). This adjustment is a direct response to escalating input gas costs attributed to heightened tensions in the Middle East and an increase in imported spot Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas (RLNG) prices.
The recent price hikes are primarily driven by geopolitical instability in the Middle East, which has adversely affected global gas supply chains. The crisis has led to a substantial increase in the prices of input gas linked to international indices. The demand for CNG remains robust, particularly in metropolitan areas like Mumbai and its neighboring regions, where approximately 13 lakh CNG vehicles rely on Mahanagar Gas’s supply network. Furthermore, this rise in prices aims to partially mitigate the rising costs associated with sourcing gas through more expensive imported RLNG.
In the short term, traders and investors should monitor the ongoing geopolitical situation, as further escalation could lead to continued price volatility in the gas market. The price adjustment is expected to stabilize supply conditions to some extent, but the extent to which it alleviates rising costs remains uncertain. Investors should consider incorporating a strategy that accounts for potential supply chain disruptions and the broader macroeconomic impact on the energy sector.
