Jefferies Downgrades Jupiter Wagons Target Price to Underperform Following Disappointing Q1 Earnings
Domestic brokerage firm Jefferies has revised its target price for Jupiter Wagons to Rs 185 from Rs 210, primarily due to the company’s disappointing Q1 earnings performance. The report highlights a significant underperformance, reflected in the brokerage’s decision to maintain an Underperform rating on the stock. Furthermore, adjustments to the earnings outlook have resulted in a reduction of FY27E-29E EPS estimates by 6%-20%, showcasing the ongoing concerns surrounding growth despite a projected FY26-30E consolidated EPS CAGR of 23% and a standalone EPS CAGR of 15%.
The report elaborates on weak quarterly results, where Jupiter Wagons’ EBITDA fell 32% short of Jefferies’ expectations. Although wagon sales increased by 38% YoY, they still fell 12% below projections, suggesting that the growth is not on a sustainably upward trajectory. Additionally, the company reported a notable decline in gross margins, which fell 700 bps YoY, primarily due to lower demand for wagon and wheelset sales, exacerbated by high overhead costs in conjunction with the planned ramp-up production at its electric mobility subsidiary, JEM Energy.
Jupiter Wagons currently boasts an order book valued at Rs 3,000 crore for approximately 7,000 wagons, predominantly from the private sector. Notably, management flagged that slower execution stems from ongoing design and prototype approvals for new wagon designs. This highlights a critical gap in visibility regarding the potential volume from the upcoming tender for 1 lakh wagons, a factor that severely constrains future EBITDA projections. With an anticipated 68% of FY28E EBITDA linked to the wagon business, these uncertainties pose considerable risk.
On a pivotal note, the company is positioned to leverage Indian Railways’ push for indigenisation within its wheel manufacturing segment. While the Odisha wheel manufacturing plant is slated to become operational by FY28, the affiliate companies engaged in component manufacturing are still at preliminary stages. Jupiter Wagons’ subsidiary, JEM Energy, secured a substantial Rs 4,000 crore order, indicating potential growth avenues. Additionally, a strategic partnership with Italy’s Lucchini RS aims to fortify its wheel manufacturing capabilities, which could be crucial for improving future operational efficiencies.
