RBI’s Aggressive Forex Interventions Echo Era of a Tightly Controlled Rupee
Recent interventions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have effectively managed volatility in the rupee amidst a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and fluctuating crude oil prices. This strategic involvement has resulted in a stable trading range for the rupee, which has maintained a narrow 30-paisa range in the previous week. Despite heightened demand for dollars fueled by hedging activities and geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East, state-run banks have actively supplied dollars to mitigate pressure on the currency. This intervention mirrors historical periods of RBI dominance in the foreign exchange market, particularly under former governor Shaktikanta Das.
As of recent observations, the rupee exchanged at approximately 95.4775 per dollar, showing minimal fluctuations even as Brent crude oil has remained near $90 per barrel. The central bank’s consistent dollar sales have allowed the rupee to stabilize within a forecasted range of 94.50 to 96.00 throughout September. Financial analysts, including Tanay Dalal from Axis Bank, suggest that the RBI’s decisive management strategy is crucial in cushioning the economy against the broader volatility presented by global oil price movements.
This period of muted movement has led to a significant drop in 14-day realized volatility, diminishing to around 2%, a stark contrast to the levels recorded earlier in August. Analysts point out that the current setup appears to be a deliberate response to create a stable macroeconomic environment, despite broader expectations for wider currency shifts. The RBI’s effective market presence is further supported by substantial dollar inflows, which have been bolstered by measures aimed at enhancing India’s balance of payments. These actions have contributed to lifting India’s foreign exchange reserves above $700 billion for the first time since April, marking a significant achievement in the country’s financial stability efforts.
