Market Watch: 10 Key Factors Set to Shape Monday’s Stock Market Movements

The Indian stock market experienced a range-bound movement last week, with the Sensex dropping approximately 500 points and the Nifty losing 205 points, closing in the negative territory. The latest session saw the Sensex falling by 71 points to settle at 78,009, while the Nifty 50 decreased by 30 points, ending at 24,366. Broader market indices, namely the Nifty Smallcap 100 and Nifty Midcap 100, also experienced declines of around 0.7%, suggesting a general bearish sentiment among investors. While oil prices stabilized at around $87 per barrel, the market remained cautious as investors sought greater clarity on energy price trends and the direction of global bond yields.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research at a prominent investment firm, noted that there is a palpable sideways trend as participants await more decisive economic signals. Despite the losses, there was a notable recovery from intraday lows, propelled by strength in consumer durables and discretionary consumption sectors attributed to improving demand trends. Analysts are optimistic regarding recent better-than-expected corporate earnings, which, coupled with supportive domestic elements, may lead to upward revisions in FY27 earnings estimates—a factor that has piqued interest for bottom-up stock picking strategies.

Technical analysis highlights immediate resistance for Nifty at the 24,500-24,550 range, where a sustained move above this zone could facilitate further upside toward 24,700 and potentially 24,850. Conversely, the 24,230-24,200 zone serves as immediate support, aligning with the 100-day exponential moving average. Additionally, a comprehensive look into trading volumes shows Bharti Airtel, LG Electronics India, and HDFC Bank among the most active stocks by turnover, whereas Vodafone Idea led in share volume traded, indicating heightened market activity in these stocks.

Market sentiment remains bearish, with only 1,478 of the 3,461 traded stocks advancing while 1,854 declined, reflecting a cautious perspective among traders. Meanwhile, stocks showcasing resilience included LG Electronics, Zee Entertainment, and Honasa Consumer, among others. In contrast, sellers were more aggressive in sectors including NALCO and HPCL, leading to increased selling pressure. Furthermore, a notable number of stocks reached 52-week highs, which suggests pockets of strength that may present selective investment opportunities, despite the overall market’s current vulnerability.
