FTA Exports Surge in Q1 FY27, Led by Over 100% Growth in Shipments to Singapore and Sri Lanka!

In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27, India’s exports experienced notable growth, with a 61.6% increase in shipments to the ASEAN region totaling $14.61 billion, up from $9.04 billion during the same period last year. Key trade partner countries, particularly Singapore and Sri Lanka, also showcased substantial growth, with exports to Singapore rising by 101.2% and those to Sri Lanka escalating by 123.8%. Overall, India’s total exports for this quarter increased by 15.92%, reaching $129.32 billion, bolstered by strong performance across various free trade agreement (FTA) partners, including Malaysia, Australia, and the UK, which recently solidified its trade agreement with India.

This upsurge in exports is likely to have a multifaceted impact on the common citizen and market dynamics. For consumers, increased exports can result in greater economic stability and growth, potentially leading to job creation in export-oriented industries. Additionally, as companies thrive in overseas markets, the ripple effect can enhance domestic production capacities, which might eventually stabilize local prices. For markets, the robust performance in exports could enhance investor confidence, leading to increased foreign direct investment (FDI) as investors seek to capitalize on a growing economy, further stimulating economic activity.

Looking forward, this strong export performance may prompt the government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to reassess their economic strategies to sustain this momentum. Policies aimed at further enhancing trade capabilities and reducing barriers for export-oriented businesses may be prioritized. Additionally, the government might focus on negotiating further FTAs to broaden access to international markets, ensuring that industries remain competitive. In the long term, such strategic commitments could solidify India’s position as a significant global trade player, aligning with the country’s broader economic goals.
