Storage Levels in India’s Key Reservoirs Approach 60% Capacity, Indicating Robust Water Management

Storage levels across all five Indian regions have surpassed the critical threshold of 50 percent of total capacity this week, reflecting a nationwide uptick in water conservation resources. According to the latest data from the Central Water Commission, overall reservoir storage reached 59.44 percent of the total 183.565 billion cubic metres (BCM) capacity, translating to 109.112 BCM. While five reservoirs are currently at full capacity and an additional 17 are over 90 percent, it is notable that 40 percent of the 166 major reservoirs are still below 40 percent of their capacity. This scenario indicates a mixed performance for the South-West monsoon last week, with rainfall being deficient in the southern peninsula but abundant elsewhere, except for eastern Madhya Pradesh. The monsoon deficit has improved, now sitting at a reduction of 12 percent.
