Gold and Silver Surge to Record Heights in India: Key Factors Behind the Bullion Price Boom

Gold and silver prices surged to all-time highs in the domestic market on Monday, January 12, tracking a sharp rally in overseas bullion driven by heightened geopolitical uncertainty and increased risk aversion. Gold on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) traded 1.5% higher at ₹1.40 lakh per 10 grams, briefly hitting a peak of ₹1.41 lakh per 10 grams during the session. Similarly, silver mirrored this trend, rising 3.8% to ₹2.62 lakh per kilogram, with intraday prices reaching ₹2.63 lakh per kg. In international markets, spot gold climbed over 1% to nearly $4,567 per ounce, even crossing $4,600 for the first time. Spot silver also achieved an all-time high, surpassing $83 per ounce.

The surge in precious metals is primarily driven by increased demand for safe-haven assets amid escalating geopolitical tensions and growing political pressure on the U.S. Federal Reserve. Weak employment data from the U.S. has further reinforced expectations of a more accommodative monetary policy, enhancing bullion’s appeal. Market analysts suggest that the recent highs reflect a strategic shift in global risk positioning rather than a fleeting trend, emphasizing that gold’s decisive movement above the $4,500 an ounce mark and silver’s strong performance stem from robust safe-haven demand fueled by issues like unrest in Iran, the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict, and broader geopolitical uncertainties. Elevated global defense expenditures and persistent inflation pressures are also contributing to underlying flows into precious metals.

Short-term outlook for traders and investors indicates that while bullion prices are likely to remain supported by the current geopolitical climate, potential resistance may arise if the U.S. dollar maintains its firmness. Analysts predict that, although some consolidation may occur after the recent sharp rally, broad support for gold and silver is expected to persist. A significant correction in gold prices would require a substantial shift in macroeconomic conditions. For silver, while strong industrial demand from green technologies supports long-term fundamentals, short-term volatility may persist due to speculative trading activity.
