July Sees Jet Fuel Demand Plummet to Lowest Levels in Over Two Years.

India’s aviation sector faced a significant downturn in July 2026, as consumption of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) dropped to its lowest level in over two years, totaling 699,000 tonnes. According to the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC), this represented a month-on-month decline of approximately 4% and a year-on-year decrease of 1.5%. The reduction in fuel consumption was primarily driven by a noteworthy decrease in scheduled airline operations, with domestic flights reducing by 8.6% to 82,437, and international flights dropping by 6.7%, marking a sharp contraction compared to the previous year. This reduction was particularly pronounced in Air India Group’s operations, which epitomized a broader trend of capacity rationalization across the sector.

For the common citizen, the decline in ATF consumption indicates fewer flight options and potential impacts on air travel affordability, as airlines navigate operational disruptions and weather-related challenges. Passengers may experience increased delays, cancellations, and diminished seat availability as airlines continue to optimize their fleets in response to fluctuating demand. This scenario could also result in higher ticket prices as supply contracts relative to demand, potentially impeding the growth trajectory of air travel accessibility for the average consumer.

Looking ahead, the long-term outlook for India’s aviation sector remains uncertain but is contingent on several factors, including recovery from operational constraints and the eventual stabilization of air travel demand. The government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may need to consider targeted support measures to facilitate recovery, particularly in light of the decreased capacity and economic pressures on airlines. Future steps could include revisiting regulatory frameworks to stimulate growth, enhancing infrastructure resilience, and fostering competition to ensure sustainable pricing and availability in the aviation market.
